Connecting and equipping Black ministers and churches for service and growth in the SoCal Network
Summary of the Historical Development of the Black Fellowship of Southern California
1990—1998…
Reverend Stuart Parham arrived in Southern California from Chicago, Illinois to pastor Lynwood First Assembly of God Church. Reverend Parham was a recent graduate of Central Bible College A/G in Springfield.
Reverend Parham was the Southwestern Director of the Inner-City Workers Conference of the Assemblies of God. The Inner-City Workers Conference was a group of Black ministers and Churches around the nation who would meet to discuss issues related to church planting, recruitment of Black ministers and institutional challenges within the Assemblies. In 1990 there were three (3) Black churches and four (4) credentialed Black ministers connected to the Conference.
The geographical area of the Southwestern Region of the Inner-City Workers Conference was North Texas to Alaska.
1998—2003…
In the summer of 1998, there was an historical meeting held in Chicago, Illinois that would change the course of the Conference well into its future. Black ministers gathered from all areas of the United States, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas. The decision was made to become a “National Ethnic Fellowship” in the Assemblies of God. This recognition would place the newly formed fellowship under the recognition of the General Council of the Assemblies of God as The Black Fellowship of the Assemblies of God.
Reverend Cynthia Smith of Pittsburg California followed Reverend Stuart Parham in 2000 as the Southwestern Director of the National Black Fellowship of the Assemblies of God.
Reverend Jamal Alexander followed Reverend Cynthia Smith as the Southwestern Director of the National Black Fellowship of the Assemblies of God in 2004.
2004—Present…
Reverend Jamal Alexander recognizing the enormous geographical area of the Southwestern Region requested that fellow members of the National Black Fellowship Board of Directors reduce the area. At a meeting of the full Board of Directors held in Miami Florida a decision was made to reduce the Region’s size. The Southwestern Region became two:
-
Northwestern Region with the dividing line being Northern California/Nevada District to the east and Hawaii to the North.
-
Southwestern Region with the dividing line being Southern California to the north and North Texas to east.
Reverend James Markham became the first Presbyter/President of the Southern California Black Fellowship in 2005.
Reverend Earl Coley followed Reverend James Markham as Presbyter/President of the Southern California Black Fellowship in 2009.
